Salamanders are a species of animal that can be found all over the world, but most people don’t even know what they are. I didn’t even know what they were until I found one in the wild when I was younger. However, once I started to learn more about salamanders, I fell in love with them, and I’m sure other people will too once they start to learn more.
When asked what a salamander is, the majority of people would likely respond by saying that it is a type of lizard, but this is certainly not the case. Salamanders are a type of amphibian, meaning that they fall under the same category as a frog or toad would. These incredible creatures may not be well-known to every person, but they are interesting, easygoing creatures that can actually be kept as pets for those that are knowledgeable about them.
The main thing that sets salamanders and other amphibians apart from lizards is their skin. Salamanders can be distinguished by their smooth, slimy skin. They do not have any scales or claws to protect themselves as a lizard would. Therefore, salamanders spend most of their time hiding under logs and rocks for protection, which is why you will rarely see these animals on a day to day basis. Plus, they are nocturnal creatures, which means that they will come out only at night to hunt and catch their prey, which consists of crickets, worms, and any other bugs that can fit in their mouths. They are small creatures that are content as long as they have food, moisture, and a safe place to hide. This is why they make such great pets.
To keep a salamander as a pet, you will need to prepare plenty of information and supplies ahead of time. This consists of setting up a space for them to live in, learning about what foods they can eat, and understanding how to keep them healthy on a day to day basis. They are docile and easygoing animals, so they make great pets even for individuals that have never owned an exotic pet before. Their care requirements are fairly basic, but if you have a salamander of your own, you still need to take caring for them seriously. Just because they are a small, inactive pet doesn’t mean that they won’t become a significant part of your family. A salamander is just as important and lovable as any other pet is.
However, pet salamanders are not for everyone. Salamanders are more for observing than playing with. They need an owner that can respect their space and watch them from a distance. Once you get to know your salamander better, they can become more comfortable around you, but it will take time and patience to reach this. Therefore, bonding with a salamander is a rewarding experience, but it is one that you must be willing to work hard to reach. If you do have a pet salamander that you are close to though, then it is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. Therefore, while they might not be the most popular pets out there, salamanders are great animals that an animal lover should definitely consider owning if they feel that they are ready.
